112 at School

 .

Objective

Emergency services regularly visit schools and welcome pupils in emergency call centres. However they usually provide a general presentation of their activities and do not mention the importance of how to call emergency numbers or the existence of the European emergency number 112. In order to make pupils associate 112 and emergency services, children should always be addressed with a standard explanation about the use of emergency numbers, including 112.  Pupils should be fully aware that the inappropriate use of 112 (or any other emergency number) can hamper the handling of a real emergency call and this can imply troubles for other citizens.  Expected result of this action will be a better knowledge on how to use emergency numbers, and therefore a decrease of hoax calls.

The "112 at School" package aims at helping teachers to educate young children in the early grades of elementary school on the existence and the appropriate use of the European emergency number 112.

Basic information on 112 is provided to teachers in order to make them better understand the 112 topic. The teaching package also provides a set of tools to teachers so they can teach 112 to their pupils, in their own way, according to their feelings and experiences.

Some results due to the promotion of 112 towards children

  • For many years,in nordic countries (Iceland, Sweden, Finland), the main target is children and teenagers. Nowadays, thanks to this communication strategy, the level of knowledge about 112 is very high.
  • In Poland, Krystian Drozdek (3 years-old) saved his mother by calling 112 while she was having a heart attack.
