Who we are

What is the 112 Foundation?

The 112 Foundation was created to promote the knowledge and appropriate use of the European emergency number 112.

Its main objective is to provide all citizens and organisations willing to inform and educate on 112 with information materials and guidelines to organise information campaigns.

The Foundation was proposed and established by EENA - the European Emergency Number Association - in cooperation with its Advisory Board.

Why do we need the 112 Foundation?

State of the art

  • More than 60 emergency numbers co-exist in the European Union
  • Only one number enables to reach, directly and free of charge, all emergency services (fire, police, medical) in the 27 countries of the EU: 112
  • Unfortunately, only a minority of citizens know the European emergency number 112.

Figures

  • Each year, about 150.000.000 Europeans cross internal borders of the EU
  • 65% of Europeans feel less safe when they are in another European country
  • 95% of EU citizens agree about the usefulness of having an emergency number available anywhere in the EU. This number is a citizen request.
  • only 25% of European people spontaneously identify 112 (19 years after its creation) as the emergency number available everywhere in the EU

The 112 Foundation contributes to public promotion and education of the already EU-wide available 112 number.

How to achieve these objectives?

As incredible as it may seem, the 112 did not have its own common logo and graphic line in the whole EU. The first milestone of the 112 Foundation was to develop one common graphic line and logo for 112. Several countrie already use this logo as the official one for 112.

The 112 Foundation works on the creation of a set of promotional/educational materials such as posters, stickers, children books, videos and audio recordings, video games, songs. These materials aim at informing on the appropriate use of 112 - where, when and how to call emergency numbers - along with messages on the damages of hoax calls. Materials are downloadable online for free and opened to customisation by any "multiplier" organisation and individual willing to inform citizens on 112, in particular children and mobile Europeans - students, workers and travellers.

In particular, teachers can receive class scenarios and materials to educate their pupils. Students organisations can also receive information materials, politicians can use the 112 logo in their campaigns, tourist agents can use materials along with guide books and their offers.

The 112 Foundation remains at the disposal of any particular request for already printed materials or technical support for organisations willing to conduct a tailored made educational campaign (lay-out, copyright, translation, coordination).
