Louis Michel becomes Honorary Member of the 112 Foundation
Louis Michel has been actively promoting the European emergency number for 10 years. In 1999, Louis Michel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium at that time, became the first honorary member and supporter of the EENA, the European Emergency Number Association. Thanks to this contribution, EENA could actively promote the knowledge and appropriate functioning of the 112 for 10 years and set up the 112 Foundation in 2009.
Children Emergency Preparedness Kit project
20 May 2009 - Following a call for proposal of the European Commission, the European Emergency Number Association (EENA) has submited a project aiming at providing educational materials to all organisations willing to educate children on how to behave in case of emergency situation and on the European emergency number 112.
The Children Emergency Preparedness Kit project will focus on encouraging the introduction in schools of educational materials (standardised tools and resources) on emergency in order to prevent injuries as well as to drop their severity. It will review and gather existing materials, as well as related literature, from EU Member States and develop standardised content in all EU official languages based on a common graphic identity thanks to the participation and advices of experts from emergency services, child safety and education backgrounds. The materials will be available online free of charge to any organisation willing to educate on emergency preparedness and 112. Safety and education professionals will be invited to disseminate and use the output.
Nara Noian Raises Awareness About 9-1-1
Nara arrived here last month on behalf of the 9-1-1 awareness campaign, created to build awareness among children of the importance of the universal emergency call number. Although the emergency number 9-1-1 is virtually ubiquitous among adults in the United States, the European Union must still make a concerted effort toward to raising awareness of its own emergency calling system—the 1-1-2 continent-wide number.

The European 112 day
11 February 2009 marks the second edition of the European 112 Day (11/2) with the aim of informing EU citizens on the European emergency number 112. More and more Member States now organise the 112 Day on that same date such as Finland, Romania, Netherlands, Poland and Denmark. The organisation of the European 112 Day follows the efforts of the EU to promote the 112 and on that day, a Tripartite Convention between European Parliament, European Commission and the Council on the establishment of the official European 112 day on 11th of February has been signed (as proposed by the European Parliament). The signature of this convention will provide more recognition for the 112.
The European Parliament invited the singer Nara Noian to perform the 112 anthem with a children choir. The lyrics of the 112 anthem were proposed by EU citizens themselves thanks to a competition held on Internet and which will recognize the best texts in all official EU languages. The Commission, the Council and several Members of the European Parliament also presented to the audience the perspectives and challenges for our emergency number.
